What Is Rosacea?

A chronic inflammatory skin condition, predominantly affecting the facial region, characterised by redness, visible blood vessels, and sometimes acne-like breakouts. Environmental and genetic factors may contribute to its development.

Symptoms

Rosacea symptoms can manifest in various forms, affecting each individual differently. Common manifestations include:

  • Facial redness: Persistent redness on the cheeks, nose, forehead, and chin, often accompanied by visible blood vessels.
  • Flushing: Temporary episodes of redness and warmth on the face, lasting from several minutes to hours.
  • Swollen, red bumps: Inflammatory papules and pustules resembling acne appearing on the face, sometimes filled with pus.
  • Eye irritation: Red, swollen, and itchy eyes, accompanied by a gritty sensation, resembling a case of conjunctivitis.
  • Rhinophyma: Thickened skin, particularly on the nose, causing it to appear bulbous and enlarged.
  • Dry, sensitive skin: Affected skin may become dry, rough, and prone to itching, burning, or stinging sensations.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis involves a comprehensive examination of the affected skin by a dermatologist, taking into consideration the patient’s medical history and reported symptoms. Receiving a diagnosis helps rule out other similar skin conditions.

Types Of Rosacea

Characterised by persistent facial redness, resembling a blush or sunburn, and the presence of visible blood vessels on the skin’s surface, particularly on the cheeks, nose, and forehead.

Breakouts with red, inflamed bumps (papules) and pus-filled spots (pustules), which can resemble acne. Commonly affecting the central region of the face, such as the cheeks, nose, and chin.

Thickening and enlarging of the facial features due to the growth of excess skin tissue on areas like the nose, chin, forehead, cheeks and ears.

Primarily affecting the eyes and eyelids, causing inflammation, redness, dryness, and irritation. Possibly leading to swollen, stinging, or watery eyes, and in severe cases, can lead to vision problems or damage to the cornea.
