What Is Hyperhidrosis?

Characterised by excessive and uncontrollable sweating, hyperhidrosis affects daily life and social interactions. This abnormal perspiration can occur irrespective of temperature, physical activity, or emotional factors.

Symptoms

  • Excessive sweating, usually on the palms, soles, underarms, or face
  • Sweat-soaked clothing, even during mild activities
  • Skin maceration and secondary infections due to persistent moisture

Diagnosis

Dermatologists diagnose hyperhidrosis through a thorough medical history and physical examination. They may use tests, such as the starch-iodine test or paper test, to determine the severity and affected areas.

Types Of Hyperhidrosis

Idiopathic excessive sweating with no apparent cause, typically affecting palms, soles, underarms, or face.

Excessive sweating due to underlying medical conditions, medications, or substance use, which potentially affects the entire body.

Treatment Options

A variety of treatment options are available in Singapore. The treatment of choice depends on the severity, location of the condition and how it is affecting one’s quality of life.

These include:

Permanent surgical methods such as local excision of sweat glands and sympathectomies are available, but largely reserved for very severely affected individuals due to the invasive nature of the procedures, potential risks and complications
