What are Cosmetic Injectables?

Cosmetic injectables encompass a range of non-surgical cosmetic substances that are injected into the skin to mitigate signs of ageing, restore volume, enhance skin quality, or modify facial structure. The effects can revitalise appearance and boost self-confidence and at the same time, avoid the need for invasive surgical procedures.

These include botox, dermal fillers and skin boosters, all of which may be used in various combinations depending on individual goals, needs and cosmetic concerns. These injectables are typically administered by certified medical professionals.

Botox, also known as Botulinum toxin type A, is a purified substance that is derived from bacteria (Clostridium botulinum). It’s a type of neurotoxic protein that temporarily paralyzes muscles. Despite sounding intimidating, Botox is safely used in various medical and cosmetic treatments. It is injected in small, controlled amounts and does not spread throughout the body.

Botox is versatile and can be used to address a variety of conditions. In dermatology, it is commonly used for reducing and preventing facial wrinkles, treating excessive sweating and managing bruxism (masseter hypertrophy).

These are gel-like substances used in cosmetic dermatology to restore volume loss, smoothen lines and wrinkles, and enhance facial contours.

While a variety of substances are used as dermal fillers, hyaluronic acid is one of the most common due to its compatibility with the human body.

The benefits of dermal fillers include volume restoration, wrinkle smoothing, lip enhancement, and “lifting” for more facial definition.

What are PEG or PEGylated hyaluronic acid fillers?

Most soft tissue or dermal fillers contain hyaluronic acid which are crosslinked with the common BDDE molecule. However, there are also fillers which are crosslinked with PEG (Polyethylene glycol) instead, which offer revolutionary benefits in the field of fillers in terms of safety and efficacy. With regard to safety, PEG has been found to have a much lower toxicity (30 times less than BDDE) and does not leave any toxic residue after degradation. In addition, PEG fillers are also more resistant to heat and mechanical stress, resulting in better rheological properties and longer lasting results.

These are cosmetic injectables that are primarily used to enhance the skin’s hydration levels, elasticity, and firmness. The active ingredient is typically hyaluronic acid, but unlike conventional dermal fillers, these skin boosters are designed to improve skin hydration and quality rather than restoring volume or addressing wrinkles.

When injected beneath the skin’s surface, these skin boosters revitalise and refresh the skin by delivering deep skin hydration and stimulating collagen production.

Choosing The Right Cosmetic Injectables

Whether you want to smooth out wrinkles, plump up your lips, or restore lost volume in your face, there’s a treatment option out there for you. Here’s how to make the right choice, in three easy steps:

  • Identify Your Beauty Goals: Start by figuring out what you want to achieve. Are you hoping to reduce fine lines or wrinkles, improve your facial symmetry, or maybe add volume to your lips? The type of cosmetic injection you choose will depend heavily on your personal beauty goals. For instance, Botox is a popular choice for reducing wrinkles, while dermal fillers can add volume and smoothness.
  • Understand The Different Types of Injections: Various injections in aesthetic medicine serve distinct purposes, including wrinkle reduction, skin hydration, and facial volume enhancement. Knowing their differences aids in selecting the right treatment for your individual cosmetic goals.
  • Find a Qualified Dermatologist: The success of your treatment depends not only on the type of injection but also on who is administering it. Look for a certified dermatologist who’s trained and experienced in cosmetic injections. They will guide you on the best treatment for your needs, ensure the procedure is performed safely, and help you achieve natural-looking results.
