What Is Obstetric Dermatology?

This encompasses diagnosis and management of skin conditions that occur during pregnancy or post-partum. Pregnancy can bring about various physiological and hormonal changes in a woman’s body, including dermatological conditions. These skin conditions can either be unique to pregnancy or may be pre-existing conditions that are exacerbated during pregnancy. Obstetric dermatologists specialise in providing care and treatment to expectant mothers while ensuring the safety of both mother and unborn child.

Types of Obstetric Dermatological Conditions We Treat

  • Also known as “polymorphic eruption of pregnancy” (PEP)
  • This is a common pregnancy-specific skin condition
  • Symptoms include itchy, red & raised bumps and patches that typically start over the abdomen and may spread to other areas
  • Also a common pregnancy-specific skin condition
  • Also known as “Atopic eruption of pregnancy”, it is a kind of eczema that occurs or worsens during pregnancy
  • Symptoms include extremely itchy bumps on the trunk and limbs
  • May persist even after delivery
  • Rare, autoimmune blistering pregnancy-specific skin condition
  • Presents with itchy rashes with blisters that can be very extensive
  • Also known as “obstetric cholestasis”, it is due to impaired flow of bile from the liver in pregnancy resulting in accumulation of bile acids
  • Uncommon pregnancy-specific skin condition
  • May be due to hormonal changes or genetic factors
  • Presents with intense itch that may occur with or without a rash
  • Laboratory investigations, early diagnosis and treatment are crucial to minimize any risks to mother and child
  • Alterations in skin pigmentation occur due to hormonal fluctuations during pregnancy, including melasma and linea nigra.
  • Pregnancy-induced alterations in blood vessels tend to occur, leading to conditions like spider angiomas and palmar erythema.
  • These are also known as “striae gravidarum”
  • They can appear as pink or red streaks initially
  • Post-partum intervention can help to reduce the appearance
  • Acne may worsen or be triggered for some during pregnancy because of the hormonal changes
  • Treatment can be more challenging as it is important to select suitable and appropriate options that are safe for both mother and developing fetus
  • Benign skin growths such as skin tags or seborrheic keratoses “brown warts” may appear or proliferate due to hormonal changes in pregnancy
