What Is Hair Loss / Excessive Hair?

Hair loss, or alopecia, is a condition characterised by thinning or complete loss of hair on the scalp or other areas of the body. Excessive hair, or hirsutism, is the presence of excessive hair growth in women, particularly in areas where hair is typically minimal or absent, such as the face, chest, and back.

Symptoms

  • Thinning hair: Progressive reduction in hair density on the scalp, often commencing at the crown or hairline and advancing over time.
  • Bald spots: Discrete, round areas of hair loss appear abruptly on the scalp or other body regions.
  • Sudden hair shedding: Acute hair loss triggered by physical or emotional stress, resulting in noticeable hair thinning or bald patches.
  • Excessive hair growth: Unwanted, profuse hair growth in atypical areas for women, such as the face, chest, and back, often presenting as coarse, dark hairs.

Diagnosis

A dermatologist may perform a visual examination of the scalp or affected areas and may conduct laboratory tests or a scalp biopsy to determine the underlying cause of the condition. Detailed discussions of medical history, family history, and lifestyle factors are also usually conducted.

Types Of Hair Loss / Excessive Hair

Pattern baldness is a hereditary condition that results in hair loss due to the influence of androgen hormones on hair follicles.

This autoimmune disorder occurs when the immune system mistakenly targets hair follicles, leading to unpredictable patchy hair loss on the scalp or other parts of the body.

Temporary form of hair loss usually triggered by physiological stress, hormonal changes, or certain medications. Hair usually regrows within a few months once the underlying cause is resolved.

Hair loss caused by prolonged or repetitive tension on the hair shafts due to tight hairstyles, such as braids, ponytails, or hair extensions.

Excessive hair growth in women, often related to hormonal imbalances, specifically an overproduction of androgens.
